How to Export WhatsApp Chat
Last updated: March 18, 2026
If you're using ChatToCourt, you'll need to export your WhatsApp chat from the WhatsApp application first.
In this guide, we'll walk you through how to export your WhatsApp chat using the WhatsApp Desktop app, including installation, login, and making sure your messages and media are fully included.
Step 1: Download WhatsApp Desktop
To export chats from your computer, start by installing the official WhatsApp Desktop app.
Choose the version for:
- macOS
- Windows
After downloading:
- Open the installer.
- Drag WhatsApp to Applications (Mac) or complete the setup (Windows).
- Launch the WhatsApp Desktop app.
Step 2: Log In to WhatsApp Desktop
To connect your WhatsApp account:
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Go to Settings (iPhone) or tap the three dots (Android).
- Tap Linked Devices.
- Tap Link a Device.
- Scan the QR code shown on your computer screen.
Your chats will now sync to the desktop application.
Step 3: Make Sure the Chat Is Fully Loaded
Before exporting, check the conversation carefully.
- Open the chat you want to export.
- Scroll up to ensure older messages are fully loaded.
- Make sure all relevant messages are visible.
- If you see a download icon on images, videos, or attachments — click to download them.
Important: If media is not downloaded locally, it may not be included in the export file. Take a moment to confirm everything you need appears in the conversation.
Step 4: Export the Chat
Once the chat is fully loaded:
- Open the conversation.
- Click the contact or group name at the top.
- Scroll down and select Export Chat.
- Choose whether to include media.
- Save the exported file to your computer (for example, Desktop or Downloads).
WhatsApp will generate:
- A .txt file containing the full message history
- A folder with media files (if you selected "Include Media")
Can I Export the Chat on My Phone?
Yes, you can export a WhatsApp chat directly from your iPhone or Android device.
However, since ChatToCourt works on desktop, you will need to transfer the exported file to your computer before uploading it.
After exporting on your phone, you can transfer the file by:
- Emailing it to yourself
- Using AirDrop (Mac)
- Uploading it to Google Drive or iCloud
- Using a USB cable
For device-specific instructions, see our guides on how to export WhatsApp chat on iPhone and how to export WhatsApp chat on Android.
Once the .txt file (and media folder, if included) is saved on your computer, you can upload it to ChatToCourt and continue the process. You can then convert your WhatsApp chat into a court-ready PDF.
